The Alchemist
Acrylic on canvas, 110×120cm, 2025-2026
This painting is currently on display as part of ‘Elements in Harmony’, a SALA exhibition at Gallery One, Mitcham, SA, until the 21st of August.
This piece started as an open space to use leftover paint from other projects. It progressed slowly, scattered little blotches of colour appearing one-by-one over the canvas. Eventually I charged my brush with momentum and sent lines of movement across the canvas, flowing currents of colour across the expanding mass of paint. Shapes began to take form. Hints of a story started to show. Then one day I noticed a face. A bearded man holding a glowing orb - The Alchemist had appeared. With the power of the Philosopher’s stone, the painting began to unveil itself. Celestial bodies appeared and imbued the canvas with their harmonised and polarised energies, which pulsed and flowed through the piece.
Slowly the nebulous clouds of colour had come to tell a story - one of a person’s path to higher consciousness. Beyond the physical state, the Alchemical process was truly to turn inner lead into inner gold, not transforming metals but the human psyche. Unconscious into conscious. They knew the real effects that emotional intention had on the physical realm, and that it was through a conscious and intentional inner state that they could transmute reality - to turn any personal event, energy or idea, be it one of sorrow or gratitude, into something greater.
Through this, I began to realise that I was the Alchemist. I had taken an empty canvas, once a depository for discarded paint, and through letting my intuition guide me I had turned it into a golden tale of the path towards something greater. I was made to walk this path in order to share it — transmuting my life events and emotions throughout my many-month long relationship with this piece, into Art.
